Madison River

River in southwestern Montana and northwestern Wyoming, one of the headwaters of the Missouri; length 298 km/185 mi. The Madison River is formed in the northwestern corner of Yellowstone National Park by the juncture of the Gibbon and Firehole rivers.

From Yellowstone, the river flows northwest into southwestern Montana through Hebgen Lake, then turns north, running between the Madison Range and Tobacco Root Mountains, to Three Forks, just northeast of which it joins the Gallatin River and Jefferson River to form the Missouri River. At Ennis Lake, where there is a hydroelectric power project, the Madison is artificially enlarged to a width of 8 km/5 mi.
