Madog (fl. 1170– )

Welsh prince. According to legend, he discovered America in about 1170, after he had fled Wales during a rebellion against his dynasty. A 15th-century poem first refers to him, but his discovery of America was not suggested until considerably later, and has no historical foundation.

He was a son of Owen Gwynedd. He is the subject of Robert Southey's ‘Madoc’ (1805).
