Maebashi

City and prefectural capital of Gumma prefecture, in the centre of Honshu island, Japan, 95 km/59 mi northwest of Tokyo; population (2005) 318,600. The main industries are lumber and the manufacture of appliances and transport machinery.

A provincial centre since the 8th century, Maebashi prospered in the Edo period (1600–1868) as a distribution centre for cocoons and raw silk. Silk-spinning subsequently flourished until the 1950s, and it continues on a small scale.

Gumma University was founded here in 1949.
