Sierra Maestra

Largest mountain range in Cuba, in the West Indies, running along the extreme southeast coast of the island, extending from Cape Cruz to Guantánamo; the Pico Turquino (height 1,972 m/6,470 ft) is the highest point in Cuba. The Sierra Maestra's slopes yield mahogany, cedar, ebony, and other hardwoods. They are also used for coffee-growing. There are deposits of copper, iron, manganese, silver, chromium, asphalt, and marble in the area.

The Sierra Maestra area gained political prominence as the base from which Fidel Castro launched the revolution that resulted in the overthrow of Fulgencio Batista in 1959.
