magic realism

In 20th-century literature, a fantastic situation realistically treated, as in the works of many Latin American writers such as Isabel Allende, Jorge Luis Borges, and Gabriel García Márquez.

The technique of magic realism was pioneered in Europe by E T A Hoffman and Hermann Hesse. The term was coined in the 1920s to describe German paintings.
