Magna Graecia

The ancient Greek city-states in Italy. The name was first given in the 6th century BC to the city-states on the east coast of what the Romans later called Bruttium (the ‘toe’ of Italy). It was later extended to include the cities on the west coast and in Sicily.

Magna Graecia (Latin for "Greater Greece" as in "greater metropolitan area") was the name the Romans gave to Sicily and Southern Italy, for this region was home to numerous Greek colonies.
The roots of modern pizza come from the ancient Greek colony of Naples in Magna Graecia, which is the part of southern Italy.
