Magog

City in Stanstead County, southern Québec; population (1991) 14,000. Magog is in the Eastern Townships, 24 km/15 mi southwest of Sherbrooke and 117 km/73 mi east-southeast of Montréal.

The city lies at the northern end of Lake Memphrémagog and just south of Mount Orford. Settled (1799) by Loyalists (those who remained loyal to Britain in the American Revolution), it developed as a textile centre, and today also has agricultural and light industrial enterprises. However, it is most famous as a resort and for the Benedictine monastery in nearby St-Benoît-du-Lac.
