Maguindanao

Province of southwest Mindanao Island in the Philippines; area 5,048 sq km/1,950 sq mi; population (1995) 662,000. The capital is Maganoy. The terrain is mostly flat and devoted to agriculture, with corn and rice being grown. Coconuts are an important export. Industry is concentrated around the town of Cotabatu.

The province has been an important Islamic centre since the 15th century.
