Magwe

Capital of Magwe division of central Myanmar, situated on the Irrawaddy River, 110 km/68 mi south of Pagan; population (1999 est) 72,600. Sesame, maize, rice, and groundnuts are produced in the surrounding region. Industries include the production of chemicals and oil.

The city has an airfield and there is an army base nearby. Magwe College is linked to the Arts and Science University at Mandalay.

Division of central Myanmar, comprising the Irrawaddy valley from the head of the delta to the confluence of the Chindwin; area 44,820 sq km/17,305 sq mi; population (1994 est) 4,067,000. The capital is Magwe. There are important oil and gas fields at Chiak, Yenangyaung, Yenangyat, and Pauk.
