Mahler, Alma (1879–1964)

Austrian pianist and composer of lieder (songs). She was the daughter of the artist Anton Schindler and abandoned composing when she married the composer Gustav Mahler in 1902. After Mahler's death she lived with the architect Walter Gropius; their daughter Manon's death inspired Berg's Violin Concerto. She later married the writer Franz Werfel.
