Mahler, Margaret Schoenberger (1897–1985)

Hungarian-born US psychoanalyst. She was best known for her pioneer work on childhood schizophrenia and the individuation process. She founded the first psychoanalytic child guidance clinic in Vienna, Austria. She was born in Sopron (Oedenburg), Hungary. She studied medicine at the German universities of Munich, Heidelberg, and Jena, gaining her MD in 1922. Married to psychiatrist Paul Mahler in 1925, she left Austria with him to settle in New York City in 1938.
