Mahomed, Ismail (1931– )

South African lawyer, appointed the country's first non-white judge in 1991. As legal adviser to SWAPO, he was the author of Namibia's constitution, which abolished capital punishment. He defended many anti-apartheid activists in political trials.

Mahomed, born in Pretoria, became a barrister in 1957. Classified as Indian under the apartheid system, he was hampered by restrictions on his movements, but went on to become president of Lesotho's Court of Appeal and a member of Swaziland's Appellate Division, and as a member of the Namibian Supreme Court he ruled corporal punishment unconstitutional. He is an eloquent speaker.
