Aga Khan III (1877–1957)

Spiritual head (imam) of the Ismaili Muslim sect (see Islam), born in Karachi, India (now Pakistan). He succeeded to the title in 1885.

He founded Aligarh University in 1910. He worked for the British cause in both World Wars, and in 1937 was president of the League of Nations assembly. He welcomed the creation of Pakistan in 1947, and hoped for a blending of European and Ismaili culture. A keen racecourse enthusiast, he owned several Derby winners.
