Mahone Bay

Mahone Bay

Inlet of the Atlantic Ocean, some 19 km/12 mi long (from northeast to southwest) and up to 9 mi/14 km wide. Mahone Bay is situated 48 km/30 mi west-southwest of Halifax, in southwestern Nova Scotia.

Islands in Mahone Bay include Big Tancook (the largest) and Oak. The main settlements are at Lunenburg, Chester, and the town of Mahone Bay (population (1991) 1,100). The bay has been a centre for shipbuilding, agriculture, and fishing since the 18th century, and is popular nowadays with tourists for its rugged scenery and resorts.
