Maid of Orleans, The

Opera by Tchaikovsky (libretto by composer, based on V A Zhukovsky's translation of Schiller's drama), produced in St Petersburg on 25 February 1881. Joan of Arc leads the French to miraculous victories over the English, but her father Thibault denounces her as a sorceress. She runs away and is captured by the English, who burn her at the stake.
