Maids of Honour, the

Oil painting by Diego Velázquez, 1656 (Prado, Madrid). The composition is of the Infanta who, together with her companions, is watching the painter at work on a portrait of her parents. The point of view is that of the King and Queen themselves (shown reflected in a mirror on the back wall) – a daring pictorial experiment. Picasso painted 44 variations on its theme in 1957.
