Maikop (or Maykop)

Capital city of the Adygeya (Adygei) Republic in the southwestern Russian Federation, 150 km/93 mi southwest of Stavropol on the River Bielaia; population (1996 est) 166,000. The main industries are the production of foodstuffs and tobacco, leather, and furniture. Maikop lies at the centre of an oil-producing region. Nearby oilfields, discovered in 1900, are linked by pipeline with Tuapse on the Black Sea. There is a famous Bronze-Age burial mound nearby.
