Main

River in central western Germany, 515 km/320 mi long, flowing through Frankfurt to join the River Rhine at Mainz. A canal links it with the Danube, so providing a large network of waterways for transport of goods.

The Main has two headstreams, the White Main, which rises in the Fichtelgebirge, and the Red Main, which rises 9 km/5 mi south of Bayreuth. It flows in a very winding course, generally east to join the Rhine at Mainz. The main cities on its banks are Würzburg, Bamberg, Aschaffenburg, and Frankfurt. It is navigable for 364 km/226 mi. A canal at Bamberg links the river to the Danube at Kelheim.
