Mainote

    0.02 sec.

Mainote

Inhabitant of Maina, or Máni, the central peninsula of the southern Peloponnese in Greece. They claim to be pure Spartans, but there are signs of Slavonic influence. They remained virtually independent under the Turks.

The Mainotes, under their local chiefs, the Mavromichali, fought well in the War of Independence but their loyalties were tribal, not national. They practised the blood feud as a religious duty
