Mayor of the Palace

Administrator of the royal court of the Merovingian dynasty from 439 to 751. After the death of Dagobert I (605–639) and the subsequent decline of the Merovingian kings, holders of this office became, in effect, rulers of the kingdom and established a hereditary succession until 751, when the Carolingian line began with Pepin the Short.
