Maisky, Mischa (1948– )

Latvian cellist. He studied at the Moscow Conservatory with Rostropovitch and made his debut with the Leningrad Philharmonic Orchestra in 1965. He emigrated to Israel in 1973 and studied further with Piatigorsky in California. He made his US debut in 1973, with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, and his London debut in 1976. His recital partners have included Radu Lupu, Boris Belkin, and Martha Argerich (with whom he performed Beethoven, Stravinsky and Shostakovich at the 1994 Edinburgh Festival).
