Mysore

City in Karnataka, south India, some 130 km/80 mi southwest of Bangalore; population (2001) 742,300. Industries include silk textiles, engineering, chemicals, fertilizers, and food processing. The city is known for the production of silk, incense and sandalwood. The former capital of a princely state of Mysore, it is the second-largest city in the state; notable buildings include the 18th-century European fort and the maharajah's palace. The Chamundi Hill (1,000 m/3,2800 ft) lies to the southeast of the town.
