Maitland

Town in New South Wales, Australia, on the Hunter River, 193 km/120 mi north of Sydney and 28 km/17 mi northwest of Newcastle; population (1996) 50,108. Grapes and vegetables are grown in the vicinity and beef cattle grazed in the fertile land of the Hunter Valley. Industries include wholesaling, retailing, and manufacturing, and the town is a service centre for surrounding areas including the Upper Hunter region. To the south are the rich coal seams of the Hunter Valley coalfield.

Maitland originated as a convict settlement in 1818, and there are a number of fine 19th-century buildings.

In East Maitland, the Bloomfield open-cast mine produces 0.8 million tonnes a year of semi-soft coking and thermal coals.
