Maia

In Greek mythology, eldest and most beautiful of the Pleiades, daughters of Atlas and Pleione, and mother of Hermes by Zeus. Identified by the Romans with an ancient Italian goddess of spring, also Maia (or Maiesta), she was celebrated in May, the month reputedly named after her.

Maia was believed to have given birth to Hermes in a grotto on Mount Cyllene in Arcadia.
