Soldiers and warriors are known to have trained in silat forms in the Srivijaya kingdom in Sumatra between the 7th and 14th centuries and in the Majapahit kingdom on Java between the 13th and 16th centuries.
They follow a form of Hinduism that pre-dates the influence of the powerful Majapahit empire that ruled neighbouring Java for 200 years from the late 13th century.
It is descended from royalty from the neighbouring island of Java who fled the fall of the Hindu Majapahit Empire in the 15th century.
