Catalan language

Member of the Romance branch of the Indo-European language family, an Iberian language closely related to Provençal in France.

It is spoken in Cataluña in northeastern Spain, the Balearic Islands, Andorra, and a corner of southwestern France.

Since the end of the Franco regime in Spain 1975, Catalan nationalists have vigorously promoted their regional language as being equal in importance in Cataluña to Castilian Spanish, and it is now accepted as an official language of the European Union. The official languages of the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona were English, French, Spanish, and Catalan.
