Majorian

Majorian (died AD 461)

Roman soldier and emperor in the western provinces 457–461. He was appointed by the Roman politician Ricimer to replace the emperor Avitus. Following a defeat by the Vandals, Majorian was forced by Ricimer to abdicate and he committed suicide.

After a victory over the Vandals on the coast of Campania 458, Majorian defeated, and concluded an alliance with the Visigoth Theodoric II in 460. He then crossed the Pyrenees to join forces with the fleet he had concentrated at Cartagena (Nora Carthago) in Spain. But the Vandal king, by corrupting some of Majorian's officers, succeeded in destroying this fleet.
