Third World

Former term used to describe countries of the developing world, now considered derogatory. The classifications First (western industrialized free-market), Second (eastern Communist bloc), and Third (developing or non-aligned) worlds arose during the Cold War, but began to lose their political meaning as the Cold War came to an end in the late 1980s.
