Majuba Hill

Mountain in northern KwaZulu Natal, South Africa, part of the Drakensberg range, rising over 760 m/2,493 ft above the surrounding country. It overlooks the pass through the Drakensberg known as Laingsnek, and is 13 km/8 mi south of the Mpumalanga province border and 29 km/18 mi north of Newcastle. The railway from Durban to Johannesburg skirts the base of the mountain.

Dutch settlers defeated the British here in 1881.

Byline: John West Last Stand at Majuba Hill by John Wilcox Headline, 19.
February 27 1882 - British troops were defeated by the Boers at Majuba Hill, Transvaal.
Perhaps in this Centenary Year of the Second Boer War it is instructive to consider two similar battles that occurred between the British Army and the Boer forces in two separate wars, namely the battle of Majuba Hill which took place on 28 February 1881 and effectively ended the war in favour of the Boer Republics; and the battle of Spion Kop which occurred on 24 January 1900, and although a victory for the Boers, the ultimate results were quite different from the earlier battle.
