Makeni

Town and administrative centre of Northern Province, central Sierra Leone, 136 km/85 mi east-northeast of Freetown; population (2001 est) 65,900. Cassava and tobacco are grown locally, and tobacco products are manufactured. Makeni is a trading centre for palm oil, palm kernels, and rice, which are sent by road to Freetown. Tie-dyeing, mainly by women, is also an important industrial activity.
