Malden

City in Middlesex County, eastern Massachusetts; population (2000 est) 56,300. Malden lies on the Malden River (a branch of the Mystic River), 8 km/5 mi north of Boston, of which it is commercial and residential suburb. Its manufacturing industries produce footwear, electronic components, metal cans, paints, drugs, and clothing.

Originally called Mystic Side, Malden was settled by Europeans in 1640, incorporated in 1649, and made a city in 1882.

There are seven entries on the national register of historic places. Notable sights include the Parsonage House (1724) and Bell Rock Memorial Park, near the site of the first settlement north of the Mystic River, which was established in 1640.

Malden

Suburban hamlet in Kanawha County, west-central West Virginia, about 8 km/5 mi south of Charleston along the Kanawha River. An important centre for the production of salt in the mid-19th century, it was the childhood home of the educationist Booker T Washington (1856–1915).
