Maldonado

Capital of the department of the same name in Uruguay, 110 km/68 mi east of Montevideo, near the mouth of the Río de la Plata (River Plate); population (2004) 54,600. Maldonado, established by the Spanish in 1755, is a seaport and commercial centre, exporting cattle, hides, and limestone to Montevideo. There are good transport connections by road, rail, and air with the capital. Its port is protected by the fortified Gorriti Island.

The town was sacked by the British in 1806.

Maldonado

Department in southeast Uruguay, with a coastline on the Atlantic Ocean; area 4,793sq km/1,851 sq mi; population (1996) 94,314. The capital is Maldonado. Agriculture and livestock farming are the chief occupations. The department has several popular seaside resorts, notably Punta del Este, located on a peninsula 7 km/4 mi southeast of the capital.

South of Punta del Este is the Isla de Lobos, a government reserve with a sealion colony. Also on the island is South America's largest and most powerful lighthouse.
