Maldonado

Capital of the department of the same name in Uruguay, 110 km/68 mi east of Montevideo, near the mouth of the Río de la Plata (River Plate); population (1996) 33,498. Maldonado, established by the Spanish in 1755, is a seaport and commercial centre, exporting cattle, hides, and limestone to Montevideo. There are good transport connections by road, rail, and air with the capital. Its port is protected by the fortified Gorriti Island.

The town was sacked by the British in 1806.
