Founder of the Maliki School of Sunni Islamic law, which dominates in North Africa. His main work was Muwatta/The Simplified, a book about Islamic law which was intended to be a bridge between the complexity of scholars and the simplicity of ordinary people, giving a guide for Muslims to follow.

He was born in Medina; his first teacher was Sahl ibn Sa'd, a companion of the prophet Muhammad. Malik was a close acquaintance of the jurist Abu Hanifah. His main pupil was al-Shafi'i.
