Malko, Nikolai (Andreievich) (1883-1961)

Russian conductor. He studied at St Petersburg with Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, Alexander Glazunov, and Nikolai Tcherepnin, and at Karlsruhe with Felix Mottl. After teaching in Moscow and Leningrad, he became conductor of the Leningrad Philharmonic Orchestra in 1926 and gave the first performances of Shostakovich's first and second symphonies, but left Russia in 1928 for Denmark and the USA. He was conductor of the Yorkshire Symphony Orchestra 1954-56 and was appointed conductor of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra in 1957.
