Mall, Franklin Paine (1862-1917)

US anatomist and embryologist. As a medical educator, he revolutionized the study of anatomy in the USA. As a researcher, he made significant contributions, revealing the muscular system of the heart and greatly increasing the knowledge of the intestines. He led the establishment of the American Journal of Anatomy (1901) and the department of embryology at the Carnegie Institution (1912), which he directed and turned into one of the world's major repositories for specimens. Mall was born in Belle Plaine, Iowa. After gaining his MD from the University of Michigan in 1883, he studied in Europe and then went to the Johns Hopkins Hospital. After stints at Clark University (1889-92) and the University of Chicago (1892), he returned to Johns Hopkins Medical School in 1893.
