Mallaig

Fishing port on the west coast of Highland unitary authority, Scotland, 50 km/31 mi northwest of Fort William; population (2001) 800. Winter herring and prawns are the major catches. The town, lying at the end of the ‘Road to the Isles’, is the terminus of the West Highland railway.

A car ferry crosses the Sound of Sleat from here to Armadale on the Isle of Skye. Loch Morar, Scotland's deepest loch, lies southeast of Mallaig.

The local heritage centre houses exhibitions focusing on the history and culture of the West Highlands of Scotland.
