Malouel, Jean

    0.01 sec.

Malouel (or Maelwael), Jean (died 1415)

Netherlandish painter. He worked in Paris for Isabeau of Bavaria, wife of Charles VI of France, and then in Dijon, where he was appointed in 1397 court painter to the Duke of Burgundy, Philip the Bold. He continued in Burgundian employ under Philip's son and successor, John the Fearless, until his own death. The only work that has been confidently ascribed to him is a circular Pietà (Louvre, Paris), painted for Philip the Bold.

He had some part in the decoration of the Chartreuse of Champmol built under the auspices of Philip the Bold. It is possible that he began The Crucifixion and Martyrdom of St Denis (Louvre) which is mainly the work of Henri Bellechose, his successor as Burgundian court painter. Lost works by Malouel include a portrait of John the Fearless, made as a gift to João I of Portugal.
