Malvern

City and seat of Hot Springs County, central Arkansas; population (2000) 9,000. Malvern lies 27 km/17 mi southeast of Hot Springs, near the Ouachita River. Situated in an agricultural region growing sweet potatoes, corn, and cotton, it manufactures wood products, bricks, tiles, and chemicals, and processes raw cotton.

Malvern

Borough in Chester County, southeastern Pennsylvania; population (1990) 2,900. Primarily a residential suburb, it is located 35 km/22 mi west of Philadelphia. Companies specializing in pharmaceuticals and information technology have their headquarters here.

Like the slightly earlier poet of 'Sir Gawain and the Green Knight,' the authors belonged to the region of the Northwest Midland, near the Malvern Hills, and like him, they wrote in the Anglo-Saxon verse form, alliterative, unrimed, and in this case without stanza divisions.
