Mametz

French village and wood occupying a commanding position in the département of the Somme, 8 km/5 mi from Albert.

In World War I, the village was captured by the British on 1 July 1916, followed by the wood 10-12 July. Both were lost to the German Spring Offensive in March 1918 and recovered in the Allied offensive in the autumn.
