Mametz

French village and wood occupying a commanding position in the département of the Somme, 8 km/5 mi from Albert.

In World War I, the village was captured by the British on 1 July 1916, followed by the wood 10–12 July. Both were lost to the German Spring Offensive in March 1918 and recovered in the Allied offensive in the autumn.

Billy, whose Land Fit for Heroes turned out to be a bedsit in Cardiff in old age, often spoke of Mametz Wood where 600 Welsh soldiers died, as many missing, 3,000 wounded in July 1916.
