Manabí

Tropical province in coastal Ecuador, situated between Guayas and Esmeraldas; area 18,831 sq km/7,271 sq mi; population (1996) 1,191,941. The capital of Manabí is the commercial centre of Portoviejo and there is an important tuna fishing port at Manta. The main trade is in fish, flour, vegetables, drink, tobacco, and animal foodstuffs. There is also some mining of sand and clay.
