Management and Budget, Office of

US government agency, established in 1970, charged with assisting the president in overseeing the preparation of the national budget and supervising its administration in executive branch agencies. In helping to formulate the president's spending plans, the OMB evaluates the effectiveness of government agency programmes, policies, and procedures, assesses competing funding demands among agencies, and sets funding priorities.

The OMB is composed of divisions organized either by agency and programme area or by functional responsibilities. These include Resource Management Offices (RMOs), the Budget Review Offices, the Legislative Reference Division, and the Office of Federal Financial Management.

The OMB, which forms part of the government's executive branch, also oversees and coordinates the US administration's procurement, financial management, information, and regulatory policies. In each of these areas, the OMB's role is to help the president maintain effective government by helping to improve administrative management, to develop better performance measures and coordinating mechanisms, and to reduce any unnecessary burdens on the public. The director of the OMB is Mitchell E Daniels (from 2001).
