Managua, Lake

Second-largest lake in Nicaragua, lying in the west of the country, 50 km/31 mi long and 26 km/16 mi wide. It drains in the southeast via the Rio Tipitapa into the even larger Lake Nicaragua. The capital of Nicaragua, Managua, is on the southeast shore. Other ports include Puerto Momotombo and Mateare. The lake, which is scenic, is used for transport and small-scale local fishing, and attracts tourism. Its Indian name is Xolotlán.
