Manassas

City and administrative headquarters of Prince William County, north Virginia, 45 km/28 mi west of Washington, DC; population (1996) 33,200. Positioned on a strategic railway link to the Shenandoah Valley during the American Civil War 1861–65, it was the scene of heavy fighting in the 1861 and 1862 battles of Bull Run. The site is now commemorated in the Manassas Battlefield National Park. Manassas Old Town features a variety of turn-of-the-century architecture. The town's economy relies on tourism.
