Manche

Maritime département in the Basse-Normandie region of France, facing the English Channel (La Manche); area 5,947 sq km/2,296 sq mi; population (1999 est) 481,500. The administrative centre is St Lô. Other towns include Avranches, Cherbourg, and Coutances. The chief products are grain, animal fodder, and fruit (especially apples for cider), and horses are reared. There are metal, textile, and service industries. The area suffered great damage during World War II.

It consists in part of the Cotentin peninsula, as far northwest as Cape La Hague. In the southwest is the bay of Mont St Michel.
