Also found in: Encyclopedia 0.04 sec.

Mander, Karel van (1584–1606)

Dutch art historian and painter. His biographical work on artists, Het schilderboeck/The Book of Painters (1604), is a valuable source of information on Dutch and Flemish art. It was modelled on Giorgio Vasari's Lives of the Artists.

Mander studied art in Ghent and Rome, his own work being a blend of Flemish and Italian Mannerist styles. After a wide variety of experience he settled in Haarlem, where he founded an Academy of Painting.
