Manelli, Francesco

Manelli, Francesco (c. 1595–1667)

Italian bass and composer. He was a singer at Tivoli Cathedral, 1605–24, and maestro di cappella there 1627–29. He then went to Rome, married a singer, and in about 1636 settled at Venice, where his wife edited his collected non-operatic works. From about 1645 he was in the service of the Duke of Parma, Ranuccio II. The S. Cassiano theatre (the first public theatre in Venice) opened with his first opera.

operas L'Andromeda (1637), La maga fulminata (1638), L'Alcate (1642), La Licaste (1664) and others; cantatas, canzonets, chaconnes.
