Manfred (1231–1266)| German ruler. He was king of Sicily from 1258. Because he had had Saracen help, he was excommunicated by the pope. He subsequently invaded papal territory and conquered Tuscany. Pope Urban IV later re-excommunicated him and gave his kingdom to Charles I of Anjou. Manfred was defeated and killed at Benevento. |
| He was the illegitimate son of the Emperor Frederick II. On Frederick's death Manfred acted as regent in Italy during the minority of the former's nephew, Conradin. He was crowned king of the Two Sicilies at Palermo. |
