Mangyshlak

Oblast (region) in southwest Kazakhstan; area 167,000 sq km/64,479 sq mi; population (1996) 340,100. The capital is Shevchenko and Mangyshlak is another city. The region borders on the Caspian Sea. It is mainly low-lying with extensive salt deposits along the Caspian coast, with rich reserves of oil and natural gas; fishing is also important to the region. Heavy industry has existed only since 1960, in connection with the newly discovered oilfields. Industries include the extraction of natural gas and oil. Mangyshlak was formed in 1973 from part of Guryev oblast.
