Manin, Daniel (1804–1857)

Italian lawyer and patriot. He was imprisoned in 1847 for his political opinions. During the Revolution the following year he was rescued from prison, elected president of the Venetian republic, and led the citizens defending Venice against the Austrians. After the city capitulated Manin was exiled and went to Paris.

He was born in Venice. From 1831 he was a recognized leader of Liberal opinion in that city. Manin, with 40 of the leading citizens, was excluded from the amnesty after the siege had ended. During his exile he played an important part in the formation of the Italian National Society.

The siege of Venice, which lasted four months, ended on 24 August 1848.
